  • Instagram was the most downloaded app in July, taking the crown from TikTok.
  • Downloads rose by 3% in July for the top 10 most downloaded apps.
  • Disney+ beat HBO Max in revenue in the U.S. in July.

Summer's officially going, the Olympic games are about to conclude, and COVID is still here. Which means... It's time to tally up downloads across stores and countries and see which apps were downloaded most in July.

Instagram Pops!

It's sort of expected that TikTok commands the charts at this point. Right? Well...

If you recall, last month WhatsApp managed to take the #1 spot in the App Store while TikTok went on to top the overall chart. In July, rival Instagram had a strong rally on Android, which lead it to take the #1 spot in the store as well as overall, with an estimated 59M download haul.

TikTok was still the most downloaded app in the App Store and the second most downloaded app overall, followed by Facebook, which moved up a spot.

Notably, Capcut, TikTok's video editor, didn't make the cut in July. Pun somewhat intended. But we did get a newcomer—Meesho, a shopping app from India that has a strong SHEIN vibe. It ended July with more than 24M downloads, according to our App Intelligence, with the majority of downloads coming from India.

Together, the top 10 apps recorded 361M downloads, according to our estimates. That's a nice improvement of roughly 3% over June's haul. If you've been following the series, you can start to see 3% is a normal variance.

Business as Usual

When it comes to revenue, things are looking even more stable.

YouTube continues to lead the U.S. chart with nearly $58M in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play in the U.S., combined, according to our estimates. That's a small increase from June. Right behind it is Tinder, which also grew by a tiny bit month over month. Disney+ rounds up the top 3, having flipped its position, and revenue, with streaming rival HBO Max.

While revenue was higher at the top, the rest sloped down by a tiny bit.

The only notable changes when we put this side by side with June's list were Hulu, which catapulted into 7th place with fairly stable revenue, and Google One, which dropped to the last place after revenue went down 32%.

Together, the top 10 apps earned $309M of net revenue (that's after the stores take their fee) from the App Store and Google Play in the U.S., according to our estimates. It's a teeny tiny drop from June's haul of $312M.
