There's an app sitting at the top of the US App Store right now, right alongside ChatGPT and Google Gemini, and there's a good chance you've never heard of it.
It's called Freecash, and it's been parked at the top of the charts for almost two months!
Freecash is a rewards app. Users earn money by playing games, completing surveys, testing apps, and hitting challenges - then cash out through PayPal, crypto, or gift cards.
It's the kind of app that sounds too good to be true, and it's been around longer than you'd think.
Freecash launched on Google Play in April of 2022 and picked up 25K downloads in its first month, according to our estimates. By mid-2024, that had grown to 600K downloads a month, according to Appfigures Intelligence. It came to iPhones in May 2023, and stayed relatively small - around 40K downloads a month for over a year.
Then something changed.
In October 2025, Freecash pulled in an estimated 876K combined downloads. By January, that number exploded to 5.5M. February pushed even higher - almost 6M.
That growth catapulted Freecash to #2 in the US App Store, where it's held a top-5 spot nearly every day since January 8th - that's over 50 days and counting. On Google Play, it hit #7 overall and #1 in Finance.
Our estimates show Freecash has crossed 31M downloads across both stores since its release. 21M on Google Play and 10M on the App Store.
So what's behind the surge? TikTok. But with an unusual twist.
Freecash ran an aggressive ad campaign on TikTok featuring a woman who appeared to be earning money just by scrolling the app. The ads were styled to look native - like organic TikTok content rather than paid promotions.
The pitch was simple: get paid to scroll TikTok, and it went viral.
But the woman in the ads wasn't a TikTok employee, and the campaign wasn't affiliated with TikTok in any way.
According to Wired, users don't actually get paid to scroll TikTok - the rewards come from completing tasks inside Freecash itself.
The ads eventually got flagged and removed. But by then, the damage - or rather, the downloads - were already done.
What users see is a straightforward rewards app. Play a game, fill out a survey, earn a few bucks. But there's more going on under the surface.
Freecash is owned by Almedia, a company described by its CEO as a data platform. Can you see what's going on here?
According to Malwarebytes, the app collects user data that feeds into a broader advertising and analytics business - and digging deeper it seems that the app is trying to identify gamers who could become big spenders and targets them with ads for popular games.
That's the real revenue engine.
The rewards users earn are a fraction of what Almedia generates from the data and ad completions those users provide, which means this could be self sustaining.
Freecash has been in the top 5 for nearly two months now, and there's no sign of it slowing down.
TikTok delivered big for Freecash and now the visibility, word of mouth, and "easy" cash are keeping it going.
