Grok Takes X's Revenue to a New High

It's been a while since I checked in on X's revenue, something I've been doing since the platform started selling mobile subscriptions back in the Twitter days.

My last check-in showed revenue was growing and that splitting out Grok was a great move for the platform. The standalone app's success also suggested Grok had probably driven much of the growth we'd seen while it was bundled into X.

Fast forward a few months and the trend continues!

X and Grok monthly estimated net revenue from January 2025 through August 2026

According to Appfigures Intelligence, X and Grok earned a combined $57M in worldwide net mobile revenue from the App Store and Google Play in August, the most the pair has ever earned. Grok was responsible for most of it, more than doubling from $18.1M in January to $37.4M in August.

X accounted for 34% of the total. Its revenue also grew this year, but much more slowly, rising 11% from January to $19.6M in August. Early after Elon's acquisition, politics dominated X's momentum. Later, the attention shifted to AI, with Grok built directly into the platform.

Zoom out to the first eight months of the year and the split looks even better. X and Grok generated $359M in combined net mobile revenue, more than double the same period in 2025. Grok supplied 62% of that total. Giving Grok its own app didn't take the opportunity away from X. It created a second paid destination that grew much faster.

Splitting the two was a great move!

Last month, xAI did it again with the release of Grok Bot, a new app for AI workers powered by Grok. Each Bot gets a persistent cloud computer and can work across apps even after its user disconnects. xAI could have easily merged that into the main Grok app but didn't, and it's probably going to pay off.

Grok Bot cumulative estimated net revenue from August 11 through September 19, 2026

Grok Bot launched on August 11 and as of Saturday is already on a million devices, with $1M in revenue after store fees, according to our estimates.

With demand for AI workers growing, I expect the AI chatbot's more autonomous sibling to keep growing and contribute to the company's mobile revenue mix.
